TL;DR:

  • Crypto firm investment in Premier League sponsorships reached a record £130 million last season.
  • A total of 14 out of 20 clubs in the British tournament maintained commercial partnerships with crypto or blockchain firms.
  • Manchester City led commercial revenues with €408 million generated in the year 2025.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued a warning to Premier League clubs because their sponsorship agreements with unauthorized crypto companies could lead to legal liabilities. The regulatory body’s warning comes to light just 8 days before the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Bloomberg reported that the influx of money from this sector recorded a notable increase following the implementation of stricter regulations against betting houses.

According to the disclosed information, the number of teams with commercial partners in the crypto environment grew from eight to fourteen over the past year. Manchester City positioned itself at the forefront of this segment, recording commercial revenues that exceeded its broadcast rights earnings during 2025.

Regulation and consumer protection ahead of the global tournament

The UK's FCA warns Premier League clubs about legal risks from sponsorships with unauthorized crypto firms

The regulatory body pointed out that some unauthorized companies might be breaching UK financial promotion rules by using the institutional image of football teams to attract fans. The FCA notified that it has already contacted the sports entities where commercial anomalies were identified.

For her part, the nation’s Sports Minister, Stephanie Peacock, stated that sponsorship revenues are relevant for the sustainability of the industry. However, the official pointed out that sports fans deserve to interact with commercial partners that are transparent and safe.

Data from the supervisory body suggest that multiple active agreements are under strict technical evaluation. Among the deals flagged by authorities is the contract of Manchester City’s shirt sleeve sponsor. British marketing guidelines strictly require that any promotion directed at end consumers must be carried out by authorized entities.

The institution’s warning details that users of unregulated firms assume the possibility of suffering a total loss of their capital funds.

Financial services operating outside the legal framework do not have the protection mechanisms of the Financial Ombudsman nor state compensation funds. The authorities emphasized that the presence of a commercial logo on a sports team’s kit represents an economic agreement and not a validation of financial safety for the consumer.

With the tournament’s opening match scheduled for next June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, sponsor visibility volume will increase exponentially on an international level. The coming weeks will define whether British teams choose to terminate these contracts or defend the revenues received.
