Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao urged iPhone users, particularly crypto holders, to update iOS as warnings circulate around the DarkSword exploit chain. In a November 6 post, Zhao stressed that wallet applications cannot update a device’s operating system and linked the issue to self-custody responsibility. The warning highlights the risk of leaving devices exposed to known software vulnerabilities.
Update your iOS, especially if you haven't updated in a while.
No wallet software can update your OS.
Self-custody means self responsibility. https://t.co/lTaAJ0zPYt— CZ 🔶 BNB (@cz_binance) November 6, 2026
DarkSword is an iOS exploit chain delivered through malicious websites and associated with spyware capable of accessing sensitive device data, including information linked to cryptocurrency wallets. The known vulnerabilities used by the exploit chain have been patched in Apple software updates. Keeping iOS current is therefore a primary defense against this type of attack, alongside avoiding suspicious links and broader crypto scam risks.
Zhao’s message does not indicate that Binance wallets or services were compromised, and it should be treated as a security warning rather than disclosure of a Binance incident. The key action for users is to install the latest iOS version available for their device and keep future security patches enabled. For self-custody users, device security remains part of protecting wallet credentials and recovery information.
