Blockstream said on September 11 that it will not pay a ransom to recover the remaining bitcoin taken during the recent Liquid Network security incident. Around 4,000 BTC were withdrawn during the incident, with approximately 3,400 BTC later returned and roughly 600 BTC still outstanding. Blockstream said it had communicated with those responsible to facilitate the return of user funds, but it will not accept a ransom that shifts the financial burden onto open-source developers beyond their economic role in the network.
Blockstream said the remaining bitcoin can still be returned under standard white-hat principles. If that does not happen, the company plans to work with law enforcement, exchanges, service providers and forensic specialists to trace and recover the assets and identify those responsible through legal means, noting that Bitcoin’s transparent ledger preserves evidence of the transactions.
