TL;DR:

  • Bitcoin has climbed 47% from its early-July low and moved back above $86,000, while Bitfinex says holders are realizing only modest profits.
  • Adjusted SOPR sits near 1.01, well below the roughly 1.04 level reached during August’s breakout, signaling lighter profit-taking despite the stronger rebound.
  • BTC closed above its 50-week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, strengthening the recovery while holder behavior remains unusually restrained.

Bitcoin holders are showing little urgency to take profits even after BTC climbed 47% from its early-July low and returned above $86,000. In a market update, Bitfinex highlighted Bitcoin’s adjusted Spent Output Profit Ratio, or aSOPR, at roughly 1.01. The reading suggests coins being spent onchain are realizing only modest profits despite the strength of the rebound. That is a sharp contrast with August, when aSOPR rose to about 1.04 during an earlier breakout and signaled more aggressive profit-taking from holders. The move has taken Bitcoin to its highest price since January, adding significance to the lack of distribution. Bitfinex characterized the market as having little selling to absorb, underscoring how restrained realized profit-taking remains during the advance.

Bitcoin Rally Meets Limited Profit-Taking

Bitcoin’s aSOPR measures whether coins moved onchain are being spent at a profit or loss, with readings above 1 indicating realized gains on average. At 1.01, the metric sits only slightly above breakeven even after BTC recovered from below $58,000 in early July. The muted reading implies that the latest rally has not triggered a broad rush to sell into strength. That behavior aligns with recent signs of limited selling pressure as Bitcoin moved back toward levels that previously attracted heavier distribution from holders.

Bitcoin has climbed 47%

The contrast with August is particularly notable. During that earlier breakout, aSOPR reached around 1.04, showing holders were realizing more profit as prices climbed. This time, Bitcoin has advanced farther from its summer low without producing the same onchain response. A stronger price move paired with lighter realized profit-taking points to greater holder patience and potentially tighter available supply. It also follows the end of a recent long-term holder selling streak, reinforcing attention on whether investors continue holding as BTC tests higher price zones.

The recovery has also delivered a technical milestone. Bitcoin closed the week ending September 20 at $81,159, above its 50-week moving average of $78,786, marking its first weekly close above that level in 45 weeks. BTC had remained below the indicator on every weekly close since November 2025. The combination of a major technical reclaim and restrained profit-taking gives the current advance a different profile from August’s breakout. The next test is whether holders maintain that discipline if Bitcoin extends beyond $86,000, because higher prices could eventually tempt more supply back onto the market.
