TL;DR

  • AI Integration: Hayes believes Tokenization could gain momentum when paired with AI agents that automate portfolio management, payments, trading, and other financial functions on-chain.
  • Beyond Headline Numbers: Tokenized data can show large asset values, but distribution levels, liquidity, ownership access, and redemption conditions remain critical factors.
  • Infrastructure Focus: Hayes favors established protocols with proven activity, liquidity, and clear token economics, arguing that these platforms may benefit most if Tokenization brings more capital on-chain.

Tokenization has long been promoted as one of crypto’s biggest growth opportunities, but Arthur Hayes believes the real catalyst could come from artificial intelligence rather than asset issuance alone. According to Hayes, the combination of AI agents and tokenized assets could create a constantly operating financial system where software manages portfolios, routes payments, and handles transactions around the clock. In that environment, Tokenization may serve as the foundation, but the protocols supporting trading, liquidity, settlement, and collateral management could capture the greatest value.

AI Agents Could Expand the Role of Tokenized Assets

Hayes argues that Tokenization becomes more compelling when paired with AI-driven financial automation. He described a future where AI agents manage financial services through continuous on-chain activity, using tokenized stocks, Treasuries, funds, and other assets as building blocks. For that vision to work, infrastructure capable of supporting frequent and small transactions will be required.

The necessary components include liquid markets, reliable settlement systems, collateral management tools, and payment permissions. Hayes suggested that Tokenization alone is not enough, as operational challenges still need solutions before large-scale agentic finance can emerge. Examples of early development are already appearing. Tools designed for AI payments separate transaction preparation from signing authority, highlighting the practical layers that must be addressed alongside the growth of Tokenization.

Large Asset Figures Do Not Tell the Whole Story

Large Asset Figures Do Not Tell the Whole Story

Tokenization has already generated notable headline numbers. On Oct. 12, XRP Ledger was listed with $5.05 billion in tokenized assets excluding stablecoins. However, the same data showed that only 9.8% was categorized as distributed. The figures illustrate an important distinction. Tokenization can record substantial asset value on-chain, but ownership distribution and active market liquidity are separate measures.

Restrictions tied to issuers, investor eligibility, and redemption terms can influence how useful a tokenized product becomes in practice. Hayes therefore applies a stricter filter when evaluating opportunities linked to Tokenization. Instead of assuming every project benefits equally, he focuses on whether a protocol plays a meaningful role in the financial workflow and whether its token captures any of the resulting economics.

Infrastructure May Determine the Winners

Hayes pointed to established protocols with existing users, liquidity, and operating history rather than newly launched tokens. He cited infrastructure that has remained active since earlier market cycles as a stronger candidate to benefit if Tokenization attracts additional capital on-chain. His thesis is straightforward: Tokenization may increase the size of the market, and AI agents may create more demand for financial infrastructure.

Yet the key questions remain: who earns the fees, who controls liquidity, and whether token holders participate in that value creation. According to Hayes, those factors could determine whether Tokenization drives the next crypto bull run or simply becomes another widely discussed theme.
