TL;DR
- The Algorand Foundation appointed William Herkelrath as CEO, replacing Staci Warden after nearly five years in the role.
- Herkelrath co-founded K3 Labs and held leadership positions at Chainlink and crypto custody firm Curv.
- The blockchain already has post-quantum accounts active in production, backed by Falcon-1024, a lattice-based signature scheme.
The Algorand Foundation announced the appointment of William Herkelrath as executive director, effective August 31. The executive replaces Staci Warden, who held the position for nearly five years at the helm of the organization behind the Algorand blockchain.
The appointment accompanies a strategy focused on two fronts: the expansion of institutional business and the positioning of the network against the latent threat of quantum computing.
Herkelrath has a well-developed profile in the blockchain ecosystem. He was co-founder of K3 Labs, an artificial intelligence automation platform, and previously held leadership roles at Chainlink, a blockchain data provider, and at Curv, a crypto asset custody firm. His background spans both technical infrastructure and institutional adoption, two areas the foundation identifies as priorities for its next phase.

Algorand Prepares for the Quantum Threat
In statements sent by email, Herkelrath noted that Algorand began working on quantum resilience years before the industry recognized it as a risk. “Post-quantum accounts on Algorand are already active today, running in production and not as an item on a roadmap,” he stated. The executive noted that his goal is to make that preparedness the standard against which the rest of the industry measures itself.
The network incorporated support for post-quantum signatures through Falcon-1024, a signature scheme based on lattices, included in its v42 consensus update. Algorand is not the only blockchain working on this issue: Ethereum, Solana and Bitcoin also have ongoing initiatives to migrate toward quantum-resistant cryptography, though none yet have active accounts in production in the same way.
The foundation also announced changes to its board: Herkelrath and Alex Fowler, chief strategy officer at Nexus Laboratories, join the board, while Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier step down from their positions. The blockchain was founded by cryptographer Silvio Micali, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and operates as a proof-of-stake network oriented toward payments, asset tokenization and digital identity.
