Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) has outlined a preliminary plan to cut its future ZEC allocation and redirect about 98,000 ZEC toward the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), a reserve designed to fund future block rewards. ZCG says its current 8% share of each block now exceeds what it can spend effectively. The proposal would taper grant funding while preserving Zcash’s 20% development allocation and Bitcoin-style halving schedule.
Under the plan, ZCG would receive about 47,000 ZEC through the 2028 halving instead of roughly 109,000 under current rules, while about 36,200 ZEC from its existing treasury would also move to the NSM if the community approves. The combined redirection would send roughly 98,000 ZEC toward future miner rewards, while ZCG would retain about 55,200 ZEC and its new funding would gradually end at the 2032 halving.
The idea has already drawn pushback from some forum participants who argue that reducing funding does not resolve broader concerns around ZCG and ZCAP accountability, representation and grant decisions. Other commenters supported the direction or called for more detail. The plan remains an early proposal rather than an approved governance change. ZCG says it will publish a fuller version covering the numbers, consensus changes and trade-offs before the community decides through Zcash’s governance process.
