The Colombian Attorney General’s Office announced the arrest of eight individuals wanted for extradition to the United States on alleged drug trafficking and money laundering charges. One of the suspects is accused of moving approximately $42 million through cryptocurrency transactions since 2018.

The suspect, Nassim Orfale Vásquez, was arrested during a raid in Barranquilla. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York is seeking his extradition over his alleged involvement in a network that laundered proceeds from drug trafficking through digital assets. The investigation involves IRS-CI, the criminal investigation division of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

The other seven detainees are wanted by a federal court in Puerto Rico. Among them is Guillermo Carpio Cárdenas, also known as Gallo or Guillo, who is accused of being the organization’s ringleader. The group allegedly used tokens, third-party transfers, and structured deposits to conceal the origin of illicit funds.

The arrests took place in Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cajicá, and Maicao during operations conducted by Colombia’s Technical Investigation Corps (CTI), with support from the Colombian Army, Navy, DEA, and IRS-CI.

All eight suspects now face extradition proceedings to the United States. The Colombian Attorney General’s Office stated that the requests must undergo the required judicial and administrative reviews before a final decision is made.
