Monad has introduced a proposal to integrate scheduled transactions directly into its protocol, allowing smart contracts to execute future operations without relying on external services known as keepers.
Currently, many blockchain applications depend on these services to trigger recurring payments, update funding rates, or execute specific operations. If a keeper goes offline, runs out of funds to cover transaction fees, or experiences an outage, automated tasks can stop running.
The proposal would allow any account or smart contract to schedule a transaction for a future block. Once accepted, the protocol would guarantee execution in the selected block, unless the owner cancels it.
Monad’s design includes reserving a portion of each block’s capacity for these operations. Gas fees would be paid when transactions are scheduled, while the MON required for transfers would be locked until execution.
Potential applications include recurring payments, automatic distribution of staking rewards, derivatives settlements, and execution of governance decisions. Smart contracts could also schedule their own subsequent calls without third-party intervention.
Monad also proposes using this mechanism to automatically refund funds when an incomplete swap expires and remove expired orders from trading order books.
The proposal has not yet been approved or implemented. Its technical specification is open for developer feedback on the Monad forum, where alternatives for scheduling transactions by time or within specific block ranges are also under consideration.
