TL;DR:

  • Tesla holds 11,509 BTC under corporate custody, according to on-chain tracking data from Arkham Intelligence verified at the close of September.
  • The accumulated position on the corporate balance sheet reached a valuation close to $997.8 million when Bitcoin crossed the $87,000 mark.
  • Elon Musk’s company has not executed any crypto-asset sell orders since liquidating 75% of its holdings in July 2022.

Tesla’s Bitcoin bet is approaching a total valuation of $1 billion following the asset’s rally during the final weeks of September. The electric vehicle manufacturer keeps its corporate reserve intact, benefiting from an unrealized gain exceeding $122 million over a seven-day period.

The tech firm has not altered the amount of assets under management for several accounting quarters. On-chain records indicate that corporate management holds exactly 11,509 BTC in wallets linked to institutional custody services.

From an accounting standpoint, the fair value reported to the SEC experienced sharp fluctuations. As of December 31, 2025, the company reported a value of $1.008 billion for that allocation, while by June 30, 2026, the figure contracted to $674 million due to seasonal market performance.

The price recovery seen toward the end of Q3 2026 enabled the reserve to narrow the gap relative to its previous accounting highs. According to market analyst reports, Bitcoin’s recent surge above $84,000 boosted the valuation of Tesla’s treasury by more than $240 million compared to the mid-year lows reported earlier.

Treasury Dynamics and Institutional Custody

Tesla made its initial entry into the digital asset space in February 2021 through an initial acquisition of $1.5 billion. Subsequently, management authorized strategic sales: 10% in Q1 2021 to test order book liquidity, and approximately 75% in July 2022 to bolster operating cash flow during factory disruptions across Asia.

Since that last transaction, the corporate wallets have remained dormant. According to technical assessments by crypto intelligence firms, the corporation’s current strategy reflects a passive holding approach that avoids active spot market arbitrage.

The U.S. regulatory landscape has also undergone significant changes for corporate issuers holding cryptocurrency reserves. The implementation of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidelines requires these assets to be marked to fair market value in each fiscal reporting period. Industry reports note that this methodology directly captures unrealized gains and losses on the general corporate balance sheet, rather than penalizing holdings solely for temporary impairments.

In parallel, SpaceX independently holds an estimated position of 8,285 BTC, corroborating a broader pattern of diversified digital exposure across Musk-led enterprises.

The next verifiable benchmark to review the company’s financial standing will arrive during the presentation of Q3 2026 financial earnings, when Tesla files its official SEC report detailing the audited balance of its treasury reserves.
