The Cardano Foundation said on October 8 that its .ada application advanced to the next phase of ICANN’s New Generic Top-Level Domain program after appearing among the submissions moving forward on Reveal Day. The initiative followed a governance action that passed with roughly 75% community support, with the Foundation seeking .ada as a dedicated internet domain for the Cardano ecosystem.

If approved, .ada could support simplified wallet addresses, decentralized identity integrations and domain tokenization, while giving Cardano projects a recognizable presence on the traditional web. The initiative is designed to create a bridge between Web2 and Web3, potentially allowing blockchain-based identities and services to interact more naturally with conventional internet infrastructure.

The application now enters ICANN’s evaluation of technical compliance and the Foundation’s financial and operational readiness to run the top-level domain. Approval is not yet guaranteed, and ICANN expects delegations from this application round to occur between 2028 and 2030 depending on how each submission progresses through the review process.
