TL;DR
- Ethereum futures open interest on Binance has reached $6.58 billion, its highest level in more than nine months.
- The figure has risen 37% since late August as ETH moved back above $2,700.
- The increase adds about $1.78 billion in outstanding contracts, signaling renewed derivatives participation and stronger market activity around Ethereum’s latest price breakout.
Ethereum has returned above the $2,700 level, bringing renewed attention to Binance’s derivatives market. Data from CryptoQuant shows that Ethereum open interest on Binance climbed from approximately $4.8 billion in late August to $6.58 billion on September 21. That represents an increase of roughly 37% in less than one month.
The increase means around $1.78 billion was added to outstanding ETH futures contracts during the period. Open interest measures the total value of active derivatives positions, so its expansion indicates that traders are committing more capital to Ethereum futures exposure.
Binance Ethereum Futures Activity Accelerates
Ethereum has returned above the $2,700 level, bringing renewed attention to Binance’s derivatives market. According to data from CryptoQuant cited in recent market reports, Ethereum open interest on Binance climbed from approximately $4.8 billion in late August to $6.58 billion on September 21. That represents an increase of roughly 37% in less than one month.
The increase means that around $1.78 billion was added to the value of outstanding ETH futures contracts during the period. Open interest measures the total value of active derivatives positions, so its expansion indicates that traders are committing more capital to Ethereum futures exposure.
The timing is particularly relevant because the rise in open interest has occurred alongside a recovery in ETH’s spot price. Ethereum recently traded near $2,560 before buyers pushed the asset back through $2,600 and above $2,700. Trading volume also increased during the move, reinforcing the broader pickup in market activity.

Ethereum Derivatives Participation Expands
The latest data provides evidence that Ethereum derivatives participation has returned strongly after a quieter period across major exchanges. The expansion of open interest can reflect new long positions, new short positions, or a combination of both, meaning the metric alone does not determine market direction.
Other market indicators, however, show that the breakout generated significant pressure on short sellers. CoinGlass data reported approximately $170 million in ETH short liquidations as Ethereum moved above $2,700, contributing additional forced buying during the rally.
The broader Ethereum market is also seeing renewed whale activity. Lookonchain reported that one large holder bought 7,567 ETH worth roughly $19.93 million after previously selling 10,500 ETH for a profit. Four other wallets also moved 48,047 ETH, valued at about $130.7 million, to Bitfinex after more than two years of inactivity.
