A Zcash derivatives investor faces unrealized losses of $7.66 million this Friday, September 18, after becoming trapped in a heavily leveraged short position while the token approaches the $1,500 mark.

Before this mismatch, the trader had experienced gains in 26 consecutive operations with a success rate of 89% in 47 transactions. This history had generated profits exceeding 9 million dollars in the futures market.

Data reported by the on-chain analysis firm Lookonchain indicate that the short position comprises 12,285 ZEC, representing an approximate notional exposure of $18.3 million. The initial entry was executed at an average price of $867 per unit, against a reference price that stood near $1,486 during the morning session.

The investor’s account balance shows a equity of $1.8 million against the total volume of the position, establishing a leverage level of 10.82x. The free margin of the account remains totally exhausted.

According to the trading platform metrics cited in the report, an additional rise in the Zcash price towards $1,551 would trigger the total forced liquidation of the remaining funds.

Before opening this short contract, the same participant had recorded gains of $1.9 million in a Bitcoin long position and nearly $1.8 million in a similar position in Ethereum. Added to this were positive trades in Solana and the ZEC token itself.

A Zcash trader is sitting on $7.66 million in unrealized losses from a short position of 12,285 ZEC.

Liquidation Pressure and Shorter Block Time

The impact of bearish bets is not limited to a single trader on the order books.

Trader Garret Jin recently recorded paper losses exceeding $26 million on a short position of $51.5 million when Zcash reached a maximum of $1,400. Total ZEC liquidations in the last 24 hours reached $32.7 million, of which $27.17 million corresponded exclusively to short positions.

CoinGecko records place the token’s quote a few dollars from the $1,500 threshold, representing an advance exceeding 10% in the last 24 hours and an increase of 39% in the last seven days. In the monthly comparison, the appreciation is around 200%, accumulating more than 2,800% revaluation in the last twelve months.

In the technical section, the network implemented a governance modification that reduced the block generation target interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Sector technical analysis links part of the network’s operational dynamism to this structural change in confirmation times.

In parallel, Lookonchain identified the withdrawal of tens of millions of dollars in ZEC from centralized exchanges to newly created wallets. The analytical firm notes that this pattern of withdrawal to self-custody could reduce the supply available for immediate sale in the spot market.

The market remains attentive to the scheduled expiration of the active Zcash development fund rules towards the year 2028, an element that will focus the next formal technical governance debates in the protocol.
