TL;DR

  • Coinbase is restoring the Coinbase Wallet name after more than a year under the Base App brand.
  • The self-custodial app is shifting toward multichain trading, perpetual futures, prediction markets, and tokenized stocks.
  • Base remains an important part of the product, while Coinbase expands access to assets and networks beyond its own ecosystem.

Coinbase is returning the Base App to its original Coinbase Wallet identity after just over a year, marking a strategic shift toward self-custodial trading and multichain access. The company says the product evolved beyond its original Base-focused concept and now serves a broader role across onchain finance.

Coinbase Wallet Expands Its Multichain Trading Role

Ryan Kass, Coinbase’s Head of Wallet Product, described Coinbase Wallet as a “test kitchen” for products and assets that may not yet be available through the company’s centralized exchange. The app already supports more than 10 networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Base, BNB Chain, Monad, Robinhood Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Avalanche.

The wallet also gives users access to perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid, prediction markets, and tokenized stocks. Because transactions and trading take place onchain, users can interact directly with decentralized markets while retaining control of their assets and private keys.

Coinbase says the wallet follows a model centered on self-custody, faster access, and fewer traditional account restrictions, although some products remain unavailable in certain jurisdictions. The company also applies compliance reviews to newer asset categories, while its systems identify and hide potentially malicious or fraudulent tokens.

The shift gives Coinbase greater flexibility to experiment with new forms of onchain finance without requiring every product to be integrated into its centralized exchange. It also allows users to discover assets across multiple networks through a single application.

Base App Experiment Gives Way To Broader Access

Coinbase changed the Coinbase Wallet name to Base App in July 2025 as part of a broader attempt to build an “everything app” combining social features, messaging, payments, mini-apps, and trading. However, CEO Brian Armstrong later acknowledged that the social experiment had not developed as initially expected.

The company subsequently redirected the product toward trading and self-custodial access. Base creator Jesse Pollak also indicated that the application would become less centered on Base as Coinbase expanded its reach across the wider crypto ecosystem.

Despite the rebrand, Base remains central to Coinbase Wallet. The company plans to surface Base assets alongside assets from other major networks, giving users more opportunities to discover emerging projects and markets.
