The narrative that positions Bitcoin as an instrument for achieving retirement without selling the underlying asset has gained traction in the sector. The mechanism is called buy, borrow, die, and it consists of maintaining exposure to BTC, obtaining liquidity through collateralized debt, and avoiding realization of the asset.
The proposal has a technical foundation, but it requires specific financial conditions and does not constitute a risk-free path. The analysis must separate the mechanics of credit from the expectation of appreciation.
In operational terms, the holder deposits Bitcoin as collateral on a lending platform. The platform assigns a loan-to-value ratio (LTV) that determines how much credit can be obtained. If the asset price rises, the LTV decreases; if the price falls, the LTV increases. The borrower does not sell BTC, so in many jurisdictions no taxable event is generated upon receiving the loan. The structure allows transforming a volatile asset into liquidity without losing exposure, but it introduces payment obligations and collateral risk.
Unlike a direct sale, obtaining a loan against Bitcoin does not imply disposal of the asset in most regulatory frameworks. However, the debt must be repaid or refinanced. The cost of capital and liquidation risks do not disappear. An investor who opts for the mechanism needs to project cash flows sufficient to cover interest or renew positions. The absence of sale does not eliminate the need for liquidity to service the debt.
The thesis of retiring without selling Bitcoin starts from an assumption of prolonged appreciation. An investor with an initial LTV of 20% can withstand a broad decline before liquidation, but an LTV of 50% reduces the safety margin considerably. The choice of the initial ratio is not a minor detail; it defines the probability of being forced to sell in a bear market. Collateral policy must be designed to survive complete cycles, not to optimize leverage at a single moment.
The history of bankruptcies in centralized platforms forces consideration of counterparty risk
Celsius, BlockFi, and Voyager froze withdrawals and left creditors without access to assets. In decentralized protocols, counterparty risk decreases, but smart contract risk appears. A vulnerability in the code or a governance attack can compromise deposited funds. Platform selection requires evaluating audits, custody structure, and resolution mechanisms in case of insolvency. Reliance on a single entity is not compatible with a long-term retirement plan.
Self-custody through multisig schemes can mitigate part of the risk, but it introduces operational complexity. A borrower who maintains full control of private keys reduces exposure to seizures but assumes responsibility for security. Shared custody solutions offer a balance between control and recovery. Custody infrastructure must be aligned with the size of the collateral and the time horizon of the strategy. An error in key management can generate a permanent loss greater than any tax benefit.
Rates on centralized platforms range from 6% to 14% annually, while in DeFi they can exceed that range or decrease according to liquidity demand. A perpetual loan without an amortization schedule generates compound interest that erodes the position if not managed. The viability of the strategy depends on the collateral yield exceeding the cost of debt and on the ability to refinance under acceptable conditions. Periods of illiquidity can raise rates and restrict access to credit when it is most needed.
In jurisdictions such as the United States, receiving a loan does not constitute taxable income in most cases. However, interest deductibility and the treatment of debt in inheritance vary. Some countries apply thin capitalization rules or consider that a collateralized loan may be a constructive disposal if the collateral is liquidated. The investor must obtain legal advice before structuring the operation, because a regulatory change can alter profitability assumptions. Tax deferral does not equal permanent tax exemption.
The inheritance transmission component also has an impact. In some systems, assets transferred by inheritance receive a step-up in basis that eliminates the latent tax obligation. Those who promote the mechanism as a universal solution omit the possibility of prolonged liquidity contraction and credit tightening. The narrative must be subjected to stress tests before being adopted as a retirement plan.
The institutional investor can use the structure with greater margin because of access to preferential credit lines and hedging instruments. The retail investor faces higher rates and lower negotiating capacity. The difference in conditions does not invalidate the strategy, but it requires a more conservative design. An initial LTV below 25% and a liquidity reserve equivalent to several years of expenses reduce the probability of forced liquidation. The scale of the patrimony defines the operational limits of the strategy.
Stablecoin loans allow obtaining liquidity without direct exposure to exchange risk. Put options can be used to hedge the collateral against pronounced declines. The combination of debt and derivatives adds costs but improves the robustness of the portfolio. A retired person who depends on the mechanism should not operate without hedges, because a single liquidation can compromise the entire plan. Risk management must incorporate instruments that reduce the correlation between the value of the collateral and payment capacity.
Between 2021 and 2022, Bitcoin retreated more than 70% from highs. An investor with outstanding debt during that period faced margin calls and possible liquidation. The strategy is only viable for those who maintain a time horizon longer than a complete cycle and do not depend on immediate liquidity. Retirement without selling demands tolerance for volatility and the capacity to wait without panic selling. The holder’s psychology is part of the risk model.
Considering Bitcoin as a reserve asset capable of serving as credit collateral is coherent with the evolution of capital markets. However, the cheat code qualifier must be rejected in technical terms. The retirement without selling strategy requires sufficient capital, low debt ratios, access to solvent platforms, tax coverage, and estate planning. Under the described conditions, it allows deferral of asset realization. Without those conditions, it converts retirement into a leveraged position without margin for error. The sector must evaluate the mechanism as a financial tool with measurable risks, not as a guaranteed outcome.
