Wintermute, one of the most prominent market makers in the crypto ecosystem, plans to allocate up to $1 billion toward artificial intelligence data center infrastructure and high-frequency trading over the next five years. The initiative was revealed by its CEO, Evgeny Gaevoy, in an interview with Bloomberg.
The core objective of the investment is to scale the company’s non-crypto activity from the current 10% to over 50% of its total business by the end of 2027. To support that growth, the firm also plans to double the team at its New York office, which currently has 17 people, and expand its global headcount by around 40%.
Wintermute Sets Its Sights on Conquering TradFi
Wintermute’s strategy mirrors that of other firms native to the crypto ecosystem that are breaking into traditional finance, known as TradFi. Digital asset trading platforms are increasingly incorporating traditional tokenized assets in search of new revenue streams.
Among the largest exchanges that have already launched tokenized stock offerings are Coinbase, Binance and Kraken. Crypto.com also announced its entry into the segment, initially offering access to 1,500 underlying stocks and funds.
Wall Street, for its part, is not standing on the sidelines. In March, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved a pilot proposal by Nasdaq to allow trading of tokenized versions of high-volume stocks and securities. Days later, on March 24, the New York Stock Exchange announced a partnership with Securitize, a platform specialized in tokenization, to develop blockchain-based trading infrastructure, including tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds.
The Money Is Pointing Toward Artificial Intelligence
Wintermute’s bet on AI infrastructure reflects enormous conviction in the sector: that high-frequency trading models powered by artificial intelligence are the next frontier to be contested, both in crypto and traditional markets..
