Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted privacy and quantum resistance as major priorities for the network on Monday, comparing Ethereum’s current “Strawmap” with its 2023 roadmap. He said several priorities now being developed were absent from the earlier plan.

The updated direction places stronger privacy, post-quantum security and protocol simplification closer to Ethereum’s long-term core. Privacy efforts include technologies such as privacy pools and zero-knowledge systems, while the Lean Ethereum initiative aims to reduce protocol complexity. Ethereum’s Foundation also established a dedicated post-quantum security team in January 2026.

The next stages will focus on research, testing and gradual protocol upgrades. Ethereum’s roadmap targets core post-quantum infrastructure around 2029, although developers stress that timelines remain subject to change. EIP-8141, under consideration for the Hegotá upgrade, could also provide greater signature flexibility for future quantum-safe accounts.
