TL;DR

  • Yellow Card raised $40 million in a strategic funding round, bringing its total accumulated capital to over $120 million.
  • The round included SC Ventures, Sony Innovation Fund, Polychain Capital and Blockchain Capital, at a valuation higher than the one recorded in 2022.
  • The company will expand its Global USD Accounts product and add payment rails in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Yellow Card announced a $40 million strategic funding round to expand its stablecoin payment infrastructure, focusing on connecting commercial banks to blockchain networks and displacing legacy systems such as Swift.

The operation brings the company’s total accumulated capital to over $120 million since its founding in 2016, with a valuation exceeding the $200 million recorded in 2022, though still short of $1 billion, according to a source close to the transaction.

The round saw participation from SC Ventures, the investment arm of Standard Chartered, alongside Sony Innovation Fund, Polychain Capital and Blockchain Capital. Chris Maurice, co-founder and CEO of Yellow Card, did not confirm the specific valuation, but noted that the immediate future of the industry points to payments flowing directly between banks on the blockchain, eliminating B2B payment intermediary companies altogether.

Yellow Card Takes On Swift

Yellow Card was founded with the explicit ambition of competing with Swift, the interbank service that processes over 53 million secure messaging instructions per day for nearly 11,500 financial institutions. Maurice, who before co-founding the company alongside Justin Poiroux, current CTO, sold Pokémon cards, recounted in a 2024 CoinDesk podcast that that was the founding objective of the project.

The funds will be used to expand Global USD Accounts, the company’s dollar account product for businesses, and incorporate stablecoin and local currency payment mechanisms in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. This product allows companies to hold dollars, operate with stablecoins, manage treasury and move local currencies through domestic payment rails in over 50 countries.

Betting on Emerging Markets

Yellow Card initially built its operations in Africa, navigating fragmented regulatory frameworks on a country-by-country basis. Since its founding, the company has processed over $10 billion in transactions and holds licenses, authorizations or registrations in 22 jurisdictions. Maurice indicated that volumes from large financial institutions are growing at a faster pace than those from corporations, a signal that banking adoption of its infrastructure is gaining significant momentum.
