An ETP (Exchange-Traded Product) constitutes the broadest category. It includes open-ended exchange-traded funds, tradeable debt notes, and hybrid vehicles. In Europe, numerous physically-backed bitcoin products are registered as ETPs with segregated collateral, a debt-security structure that isolates underlying assets from the issuer’s balance sheet. The trap of structural discount remains present in cryptoasset trusts that have not migrated to an open-ended structure. Products tied to ether, solana, or token baskets still lack an approved spot ETF in the United States. The investor accessing them through an OTC trust watches the share price diverge persistently from the underlying asset. The argument that the discount will close upon a future conversion is a corporate-event thesis, not a product feature. Without a fixed date or a contractual obligation from the manager, that discount represents an illiquidity cost that must be modeled explicitly.
Another area of opacity is the delegation of custody. The chain running from the custodian’s cold wallet to the product holder can include unregulated sub-custodians, insurance policies with broad exclusions, and undisclosed rehypothecation agreements.
