Gabriel Perez, a White House technical assistant and presidential teleprompter operator since 2016, is in negotiations with federal regulators after being investigated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for betting on the prediction market Kalshi on the content of Donald Trump‘s speeches, earning profits exceeding $100,000.
The platform was the one that alerted the CFTC about suspicious activity in its “Mentions” market, where users can bet on specific words or topics mentioned in public speeches.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, Perez placed bets on more than a dozen presidential addresses over a three-month period, including the State of the Union address in February, a Trump speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, and a Medal of Honor ceremony in March.
In certain cases, investigators detected that Perez withdrew bets mid-speech when Trump skipped segments that included words he had wagered on. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Perez was placed on unpaid leave, and that Trump described the situation as a “disgrace“.
The CFTC reportedly also alerted federal prosecutors in Manhattan, who declined to open a criminal investigation. The terms of a possible settlement would include the return of the profits and a ban on conducting similar trades in the future.
