Hostplus is considering giving members access to Bitcoin and other digital assets through its Choiceplus investment option, Chief Investment Officer Sam Sicilia said in an interview published by Bloomberg. The move would mark a rare opening to crypto from one of Australia’s largest pension funds.

Hostplus manages more than A$150 billion, or about $105 billion, and is looking at crypto exposure inside the member-directed Choiceplus structure, which lets individuals self-manage part of their retirement portfolio. Bloomberg reported that roughly 1% of the fund’s total assets are currently invested through Choiceplus, underscoring that any rollout would start from a relatively narrow channel rather than across the full pension base.

The next thing to watch is whether Hostplus moves from evaluation to launch and how broad that access becomes. For now, the proposal suggests any first step into crypto would be framed as an optional, self-directed feature rather than a fund-wide allocation.
