TL;DR
- NEAR Foundation joined the x402 Foundation, a Linux Foundation body dedicated to open infrastructure for the agent economy.
- The alliance also includes Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, Mastercard, Visa and Stripe.
- INTENTS settles across more than 30 chains and 180 assets, while AI offers private inference over more than 40 frontier models.
NEAR Foundation announced its official incorporation into the x402 Foundation, the Linux Foundation body oriented toward the development of open, accessible and transparent infrastructure for the agent economy. With this integration, the protocol joins globally significant companies such as Amazon Web Services, American Express, Cloudflare, Google, Mastercard, Microsoft, Shopify, Stripe and Visa, all involved in defining how autonomous agents will conduct transactions in the future.
The x402 protocol offers agents a shared, open way to make payments, with extensibility across blockchains and traditional payment infrastructure. However, an agent operating in a truly autonomous manner requires more than a payment layer: it needs persistent identity, cross-chain liquidity, private inference, confidential execution and the ability to coordinate with other agents. These capabilities are often divided among different parties without coordination. NEAR aims to bring them together into a single system.
NEAR’s Full Stack for the Agent Economy
The infrastructure NEAR is building to operate alongside x402 spans four pillars. Intents provides universal liquidity and confidential execution, offering settlements across more than 30 chains and 180 assets. NEAR AI offers private inference with TEE compliance over more than 40 frontier models. The Agent Market enables discovery and coordination between agents. Finally, the NEAR Protocol provides settlement that is scalable and resistant to quantum computing. The architecture aims to allow an agent to pay via x402 and rely on the protocol’s infrastructure for everything surrounding that payment.
Defining the Foundation for the Future of Agent-to-Agent Commerce
The choice of standards at this early stage will have lasting consequences. According to the foundation itself, just as the initial architecture of the internet was defined once and persisted for decades, the rails governing how agents move value will tend to consolidate in the same way.
NEAR Foundation stated that it joined x402 to contribute to those rails in an open manner and connect an open payment protocol with the full stack that agents depend on, so that the value generated returns to those who contribute capital, data and intent.
