Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin pushed back on the idea that increasingly capable artificial intelligence will make cybersecurity effectively unwinnable. In a September 16 post on X, Buterin argued that AI could ultimately strengthen defenders by making rigorous software verification more practical, rather than permanently giving attackers the advantage.
It's an increasingly common take that AI hacking means cybersecurity is doomed.
I disagree. I think cybersecurity is naturally defense-favoring once people get their shit together. And anyone who continues to hold cryptocurrency (including me, ~90% of my net worth) is implicitly…

His argument centers on formal verification, which uses mathematical proofs to determine whether software satisfies precisely defined security properties. Buterin said sufficiently advanced AI could help prove that programs behave securely, while acknowledging that defining exactly what “secure” means across complex systems remains a major challenge, particularly when databases, networks, operating systems, libraries and hardware can introduce vulnerabilities.
Buterin also noted that roughly 90% of his net worth remains in cryptocurrency, describing continued crypto ownership as an implicit bet that highly secure digital systems can be built despite stronger attackers. The next challenge is expanding formal verification from individual components toward complete software systems, with AI potentially helping developers identify incomplete specifications and prove increasingly complex security guarantees.
