Solana Pay Expands Into South Korea as KSNet Connects 330,000+ Merchants

On Thursday, South Korean payment solutions provider KSNet formalized a memorandum of understanding with the Solana Foundation to link Solana Pay technology to its commercial infrastructure.

The agreement was signed at KSNet’s physical headquarters in the Seocho-gu district of Seoul. With a track record of over 25 years in the South Korean financial sector, the firm serves as a Value-Added Network (VAN) and payment gateway in the local market. The company processes approximately 130 million transactions per month.

Through this alliance, both entities will sequentially develop two proof-of-concept (PoC) projects. The first phase comprises the technical demonstration of the connection between the blockchain’s digital payment standard and the Asian firm’s physical and online merchant network.

The project design includes the implementation of filters aimed at complying with local regulatory requirements regarding anti-money laundering (AML). Institutional information from KSNet indicates that these measures seek to prevent the entry of illicit funds into the system.

Additionally, the technical architecture includes a direct link to the South Korean won settlement network. Official documentation indicates that this link acts as a mechanism to mitigate risks arising from exchange rate volatility during the settlement of digital assets.

Technological Infrastructure and Micropayments for Artificial Intelligence

The second phase of the collaboration focuses on analyzing the x402 protocol within KSNet’s automated payment systems. This tool utilizes the HTTP 402 (“Payment Required”) status code, a standard communication protocol between web browsers and servers.

The x402 specification allows artificial intelligence agents to autonomously execute micropayments when requesting access to application programming interfaces (APIs) or restricted digital content. According to the technical specifications of the protocol, the transaction does not require complex login processes or credit card authentication.

Traditional card networks operate under multi-level fee structures. Data presented by the protocol’s developers suggest that the fixed costs of traditional banking hinder the commercial viability of micropayments for small amounts.

Reports from the Solana Foundation point out that the confirmation speed and low fees of its blockchain network position it as a key element for the adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) payment models.

Following the signing of the memorandum, both institutions will begin technical viability testing in a controlled environment. Representatives from KSNet stated that the results obtained during these testing phases will define the parameters for an eventual commercial rollout adapted to the South Korean financial framework.
