Unprecedented strategic alliance, PayPal partners with OpenAI. The goal of this partnership is to integrate its digital wallet directly with ChatGPT, which will allow users to buy items discovered through the artificial intelligence tool. The agreement, confirmed over the weekend, was announced by PayPal CEO, Alex Chriss, who highlighted in an interview with CNBC that the “hundreds of millions” of PayPal users will be able to use the “Buy with PayPal” button for a secure payment experience.

This move positions PayPal as a key player in the emerging “era of agentic commerce,” as Chriss called it, where AI acts as a shopping assistant. For OpenAI, this expands its e-commerce strategy, adding to recent integrations with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart. For PayPal merchants, their inventory can be listed on ChatGPT, and the company will manage all payment processing, without the merchant needing to register with OpenAI.

The integration will begin next year and is part of PayPal’s strategy to be the payments infrastructure in the AI era, adding to agreements with Google and Perplexity. Adoption by ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly users will need to be monitored, as well as how this alliance, based on PayPal’s verified network, redefines the digital shopping experience.
