Carmine G. Agnello, grandson of the notorious mob boss John Gotti, received a 15-month prison sentence for pandemic-era fraud. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York reported that the defendant diverted more than $420,000 in SBA relief funds toward cryptocurrency businesses instead of using them for his auto recycling company. This case highlights the misuse of Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) during the COVID-19 crisis.

This crime exposes the structural vulnerability in the design of emergency aid programs, where the speed of disbursement outpaced data verification. Cybercrime experts indicate that the combination of relaxed controls and a maturing crypto market created an opportunity for opportunistic fraud. The SBA estimates that over $200 billion in potentially fraudulent loans were distributed, evidencing a systemic problem in the management of these public funds.

Agnello, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud, must pay more than $1.2 million in restitution, in addition to serving supervised release and community service. While the defense alleged a purported gambling addiction, prosecutors treated the case as straight fraud. Tracking these fraudulent funds, now within the crypto ecosystem, represents the next challenge for authorities.
