API3 built its name on a single, contrarian idea in the oracle market: that the provider of data should be the one delivering it on-chain, with no third-party relayer in between. That principle has carried the project from decentralized price feeds into a value-capture mechanism that pays DeFi protocols back — and now into a marketplace aimed squarely at AI agents. Taken together, the moves sketch a project trying to outgrow the narrow definition of “oracle” it helped create.
The foundation is the first-party oracle, a term API3 coined for data providers who operate their own nodes rather than handing information to intermediaries. On that base the project maintains more than 100 data feeds across dozens of networks, sourced directly from the parties that produce the data. But the piece that has drawn the most attention from DeFi builders is API3‘s answer to a persistent leak in the sector: Oracle Extractable Value.
The problem OEV addresses is familiar to anyone who has run a lending market. Every time an oracle updates a price, that update creates on-chain opportunities — liquidations and arbitrage — that specialized bots race to capture. The value flows to those searchers and the validators they pay, effectively draining out of the protocol that relied on the feed in the first place. API3’s design flips the arrangement: it auctions off the right to act on each update and returns the proceeds to the application that generated the value, rather than letting it leak to outside actors. For a sector that has long treated oracle costs as an unavoidable expense, the reframing matters — the feed can pay a protocol back instead of only charging it, with early adopters including established lending markets.
AirnodeHub extends the same underlying conviction — that data is most trustworthy when the source signs it — to a customer the oracle world was not built for. Where a DeFi application reads a signed price from an on-chain feed, an autonomous agent can now call a signed API response from AirnodeHub and verify it the same way. The primitive is identical; only the audience changes. Both rest on cryptographic attestation that ties a piece of data back to whoever produced it.
The connective tissue is Airnode, API3’s oracle software, which wraps an existing API, publishes a machine-readable description of it, and signs every response. The same tool that lets a provider serve a blockchain now lets it serve an agent — and the marketplace handles the discovery, pricing and payment work that data providers have rarely had reason to build. Agents state what they need in plain language and receive candidate calls with parameters and prices attached; payment runs on x402, an open pay-per-call standard, so an agent settles for exactly what it uses without an account or key. At launch the catalogue spans market data, weather, aviation, health, sports and more, each listing marked according to whether the original producer runs it directly.
The expansion arrives as API3 continues to develop its treasury and governance under the API3 DAO, which recently approved a new funding cycle that includes support for AirnodeHub alongside its ongoing oracle and value-capture programs. It is, by the project’s own account, early: the marketplace is in early access, listings are free to call for now, and API3 builds and hosts the current integrations while it works toward letting providers operate their own nodes.
What ties the roadmap together is a single, consistent instinct. Whether the beneficiary is a lending protocol reclaiming value that used to leak to bots, or an autonomous agent that needs to prove where its data came from, API3 keeps returning to the same two commitments — send value back to the parties that create it, and make data verifiable to its source. AirnodeHub is the clearest sign yet that the project no longer sees itself as only an oracle. Details on the oracle network and the marketplace are available at api3.org and airnodehub.api3.org.
About API3
API3 is a decentralized oracle project that connects real-world data directly to blockchains and, increasingly, to AI agents through first-party, cryptographically signed data. It pioneered the first-party oracle model — in which data providers operate their own oracle nodes rather than relying on third-party intermediaries — and maintains more than 100 data feeds across dozens of networks. Through its Oracle Extractable Value (OEV) mechanism, API3 returns value generated by oracle updates to the applications that create it. Its latest initiative, AirnodeHub, extends the same source-signed data model to the emerging agent economy. API3 is governed by the API3 DAO. Learn more at api3.org and airnodehub.api3.org.
