Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) confirmed his plans to file a defamation lawsuit against U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren. Through a post on X and a formal letter sent by his attorney, Teresa Goody Guillen, CZ demands an immediate public retraction of Warren’s statements, accusing her of spreading “false claims” linking him to money laundering charges that, according to him, never existed.
The dispute intensified after CZ received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump last week, which cleared the legal penalties stemming from a 2023 plea agreement for Bank Secrecy Act compliance failures. Despite the Department of Justice finding no evidence of money laundering or fraud, Warren allegedly referred to CZ on social media as a “convicted felon.” CZ’s legal team calls these claims defamatory.
If Senator Warren does not publicly retract, the defamation lawsuit will proceed. However, legal experts warn that such litigation against senators is difficult due to legislative immunity and the high standard of proving “actual malice.” The case will depend on whether Warren’s comments are considered protected political speech or if she knowingly spread falsehoods.
