Pleterski, 27, was charged in May 2024 with fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime in connection with an alleged multimillion-dollar investment scheme. CBC previously reported that investors seeking to recover about $40 million forced him into bankruptcy, while the bankruptcy process recovered roughly $3 million for about 160 investors. The allegations remain unproven in court.
The jury trial is scheduled to run for about four weeks. Nakatsuru said he will take an enhanced role because Pleterski is self-represented, including raising objections when needed to ensure only admissible evidence reaches the jury. The next step is the start of testimony and evidence on October 5, when prosecutors will begin presenting their case.
