TL;DR
- Crypto Exchange Strategy: Bybit CEO Ben Zhou says traders increasingly want crypto, stocks, gold, forex, indices, derivatives, payments, and wealth tools together.
- Market shift: Bybit’s repositioning comes as BitMEX ended trading, CoinEx announced a wind-down, and BitMart explores restructuring, with Coinbase also expanding into stocks and prediction markets.
- Ecosystem: Bybit says it serves more than 80 million registered users and is extending its trading business with payments, spending tools, and flexible staking.
The era of the pure Crypto Exchange is fading, with traders looking for multiple financial markets in one place, according to Bybit co-founder and CEO Ben Zhou. He said crypto users also want stocks, gold, forex, indices and derivatives, together with tools to pay, save and grow their wealth. The shift anchors Bybit’s “Make Your Move” campaign, presenting the company through a connected financial platform rather than a Crypto Exchange focused mainly on digital assets.
Bybit Expands Beyond the Crypto Exchange Model
Bybit says its new positioning brings crypto, stocks, gold, forex, indices and derivatives into one platform, supported by payments, spending, wealth products and institutional solutions. The company already provides derivatives linked to stocks, gold and indices, alongside forex, offering price exposure without ownership of those assets.
For Zhou, the move reflects how the Crypto Exchange business has changed since Bybit began with crypto derivatives. The company says it serves more than 80 million registered users across 181 countries and regions, with over 442 spot assets and 235 traditional-market instruments through its TradFi and RWA offerings. That scale supports an effort to carry the Crypto Exchange identity into a wider financial proposition.

Trading Platforms Face a Changing Market
The repositioning arrives with established operators pulling back. BitMEX ended trading on Wednesday after 11 years, and CoinEx announced a wind-down this month, citing falling trading volumes and rising compliance costs. BitMart announced closure plans in July but is exploring a restructuring that could allow some operations to return.
Coinbase is also moving beyond the traditional Crypto Exchange format through its “Everything Exchange” strategy, adding stocks and prediction markets beside crypto. These moves show platforms testing a model where a Crypto Exchange becomes one part of a wider range of financial services.
Payments and AI Support Bybit’s New Direction
Bybit is pairing its Crypto Exchange expansion with everyday finance services. Bybit Pay supports direct crypto transfers, Bybit Card links digital assets with daily spending, and Bybit P2P provides local fiat and crypto access through 48,000 active merchants. Bybit Earn offers flexible staking without a fixed lock-up period.
The company is adding AI to help users navigate its ecosystem. Bybit AI connects with more than 600 platform services and covers 1,278 support scenarios. Zhou said the next generation of financial platforms will not be built around a single asset class, placing the Crypto Exchange within a more connected financial offering.
