Residents of a rural North Texas community have failed in their attempt to incorporate a new city to regulate the Bitcoin mining noise coming from a nearby facility. The proposal was rejected on Tuesday night, with 62% of the 138 voters opposing the creation of the “City of Mitchell Bend”. A representative for MARA Holdings, the plant’s owner, applauded the result, calling the incorporation attempt a “sham” and an “illegal attempt to weaponize municipal incorporation.”
The conflict centers on the noise from 60,000 computers at the MARA plant, which locals claim has “destroyed the tranquility.” Although the company installed a soundproofing wall and liquid cooling systems, residents affirm that the noise persists. The incorporation attempt was a strategic move, as Texas counties cannot enforce noise regulations, but cities can. The election defeat halts the main legal path residents saw to force a noise reduction.
Despite the defeat, resident Danny Lakey stated that “we will continue to do what we can to not let industry take over the county.” Meanwhile, MARA, which had previously tried to block the election with a lawsuit (which was denied), reiterates its commitment to “act as a responsible neighbor” and maintains that it operates “well below” legal sound limits. Attention is now focused on whether residents will seek other legal or community pressure avenues.
