TL;DR:

  • Kalshi Prime partnered with BitGo Holdings to allow institutional clients to secure crypto-backed loans and fund trading margins.
  • The program accepts Bitcoin, Ether, and compliant stablecoins under a tri-party custody framework at BitGo Bank & Trust.
  • The platform processed nearly $1.1 billion in daily trading volume for perpetual futures last Tuesday, according to market records.

Financial derivatives and prediction platform Kalshi enabled a mechanism allowing institutional traders to use Bitcoin as collateral for perpetual futures trading within a regulated U.S. framework. The announcement was formalized following a strategic custody partnership with specialized firm BitGo Holdings.

The operating framework is executed through Kalshi Prime, the CFTC-registered futures commission merchant. Under this model, participants deposit their digital holdings at BitGo Bank & Trust to secure credit lines managed by Kalshi Katalyst, the company’s lending subsidiary.

The proceeds from these loans are directed specifically toward meeting margin requirements across the portfolio of perpetual contracts listed on the primary exchange. In this regard, Jeff Bandman, CEO of Kalshi Prime, told Bloomberg that this design aims to prevent traders from liquidating spot positions simply to secure operating liquidity.

The technical framework adopted corresponds to a tri-party collateral management model. This structure formally binds the borrower, the lending entity, and an independent custodian responsible for safeguarding the pledged assets while positions remain open in the order book.

Eligible assets include Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins meeting regulatory criteria under current U.S. law. Company documentation indicates that the technical architecture anticipates the gradual addition of other institutional custodians to the settlement network over coming operating cycles.

Institutional structure and competition against offshore venues

Perpetual futures are derivative contracts without an expiration date. Unlike traditional fixed-term futures, these instruments rely on periodic funding rate mechanisms to keep prices tethered to the underlying spot market.

Federal regulators granted initial approval for KalshiEX’s BTCPERP contract on May 29 of this year. Platform metrics confirm that trading volume across its crypto derivatives surpassed $1 billion during its inaugural week of official listing.

The commercial initiative directly targets crypto-native brokerages and entities managing large balance sheets. According to the Bloomberg report, the exchange aims to narrow the competitive gap with offshore decentralized platforms like Polymarket, which have historically operated free from the compliance standards enforced on U.S.-regulated firms.

Company representatives highlighted that access to crypto collateralization provides significant utility for international corporations. Firms across regions such as Latin America, whose day-to-day operations rely on USD-pegged stablecoins, now have a channel to hedge positions without incurring local foreign exchange frictions.

Meanwhile, clearing house subsidiary Kalshi Klear filed a formal petition with the CFTC in September seeking authorization to offer leveraged trading on event contracts. Current regulatory standards mandate that registered U.S. platforms hold 100% pre-funded collateral against every open position.

Regulatory filings specify that leverage provisions will be restricted to self-clearing clearing members demonstrating specific net working capital thresholds. Concurrently, the firm is pursuing additional regulatory clearances to expand its roster of perpetual derivatives into commodities such as crude oil and U.S. equities.
