Patrick Witt, executive director of the White House Crypto Council, is leaving government service and plans to continue his work in the private sector. In an announcement on X, Witt described serving in the administration as a privilege and said he intends to keep advancing American technological leadership outside government. His departure closes another chapter in Washington’s evolving approach to cryptocurrencies. Witt is moving to the private sector after leading the administration’s digital asset policy efforts.

Witt Leaves With the CLARITY Act Still Unfinished

Witt had become one of the White House’s central figures in negotiations around the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a market-structure proposal for the crypto industry. Earlier this year, he publicly promoted a timetable for advancing the CLARITY Act, but the legislation later encountered resistance in the Senate. His exit arrives with the administration’s signature market-structure effort still unfinished, leaving the next phase of White House coordination without the official closely associated with the push.

The Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act in September after a procedural vote fell short of the threshold needed to move forward. The outcome left the US digital asset framework unresolved and added uncertainty around the legislation’s path. The Senate setback for the CLARITY Act therefore forms an important backdrop to Witt’s departure. The personnel change does not itself determine the bill’s future, but it removes a prominent White House negotiator from the process.

Witt’s departure also deepens turnover within the council. He was the last remaining staffer after White House crypto and AI czar David Sacks left in March and deputy director Harry Jung departed in July. Witt’s predecessor, Bo Hines, had already left the White House Crypto Council in August 2025 before later joining Tether as a strategic adviser. The council has now lost several senior figures who helped shape the administration’s crypto agenda.

In his farewell message, Witt thanked officials and lawmakers involved in digital asset policy, highlighting work around the GENIUS Act and the effort to advance the CLARITY Act. He did not identify his next employer, saying he would have more to share about his next steps and planned to pursue the same mission from the private sector. The immediate question for Washington is who, if anyone, will take over the council’s policy coordination as major crypto legislation remains unresolved in the Senate.
