Venture capital division a16z Crypto unveiled Lattice Jolt this Wednesday, a revamped version of its open-source zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM). This upgrade replaces traditional elliptic-curve cryptography with a lattice-based architecture specifically engineered to mitigate the impending threat of quantum computing. The development integrates the Akita polynomial commitment scheme—co-designed with LayerZero, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Southern California—aligned with NIST post-quantum standards.

This advancement marks a key milestone for scalability and security across the blockchain industry. Unlike other hash-based quantum-resistant systems, Lattice Jolt reduces proof sizes to a range between 65 and 80 KB, triples proof generation speeds, and halves memory consumption, achieving the capability to process millions of cycles per second with RISC-V architecture support.

Currently, the technology is undergoing active testing on LayerZero’s Zero network, paving the way for decentralized protocols to migrate toward quantum-ready cryptographic infrastructure.
