The alleged white-hat hacker who drained nearly 4,000 Bitcoin from Liquid Network transferred 3,400 BTC (approximately $268 million) back to the federation’s wallet. The transaction was confirmed this Monday following a series of communications via OP_RETURN messages between the attacker and Blockstream developers, after patching the flaw in the Elements software that triggered the exploit.
The actor retained 598.5 BTC—around $47 million—representing 15% of the total stolen amount and suggesting a self-assigned bounty without an announced formal agreement. Although the restitution mitigates the impact on the 1:1 backing reserves of L-BTC, the incident highlights critical vulnerabilities in sidechain token issuance and elevates the debate surrounding the limits of decentralized security.
Currently, Liquid Network remains in an operational pause while technical teams validate software patches and audit bridge stability. The next key step will be confirming full reserve parity to safely resume withdrawals and deposits across the network.
