In its latest report, blockchain security firm CertiK revealed that physical or brute-force attacks against cryptocurrency investors reached 52 incidents during the first half of the year. According to the auditing firm, recorded financial exposure—comprising ransom demands and stolen funds—surged by over 1,000% year-over-year, climbing from $10.5 million to $124 million.
The report highlights a strong geographical concentration in Western Europe, which accounted for 39 of the cases. France established itself as the main global epicenter, recording 33 attacks. Furthermore, criminal tactics showed a concerning shift: home invasions linked to the theft of digital assets escalated from a single reported case in the first half of last year to 20 incidents in the same period this year.
To mitigate this emerging risk, experts recommend limiting public exposure regarding personal identity and crypto holdings. They also suggest safeguarding assets through custody schemes where no single individual can unilaterally transfer funds, as well as separating private keys and strengthening home security.
