This Monday, one of the global mining giants, MARA Holdings, announced the launch of the MARA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the long-term health of the Bitcoin network. During the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas, the firm’s CEO, Fred Thiel, presented this initiative, which seeks to go beyond block extraction by focusing on open-source research and the protection of the protocol against emerging technological challenges.

The MARA Foundation represents MARA’s strategic commitment to supporting the health of the Bitcoin network, outside of our responsibilities as miners alone.

The foundation will prioritize the development of tools resistant to quantum computing, such as PQ wallets and technical proposals like BIP 360. Although the quantum threat is currently theoretical, MARA maintains that early preparation is vital due to the slow evolution of Bitcoin’s consensus. Additionally, the organization will address the network’s “security budget,” promoting a sustainable fee market to ensure that miners remain incentivized once block subsidies disappear.
As a first step, the MARA Foundation has allocated a $100,000 grant that will be awarded via community vote to one of three partner organizations: SateNet, 256 Foundation, or Librería de Satoshi. With this move, MARA seeks to position itself not only as an infrastructure operator but as a pillar in the governance and technical defense of the crypto ecosystem.
