Nevada has officially become the first U.S. state to temporarily ban Kalshi’s operations following the granting of a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO). This Friday, a state judge ruled that the Nevada Gaming Control Board is likely to succeed in its case, forcing the prediction market platform to suspend contracts for sports, political, and entertainment events for the next 14 days.

The ban, which will remain in effect until April 3, is a significant blow to Kalshi, valued at $22 billion. The decision reflects Nevada’s stance, which classifies these markets as illegal at the state level for facilitating unauthorized gambling. This case sets a crucial precedent in the ongoing jurisdictional dispute, where platforms argue they are federally regulated by the CFTC as event contracts.

A hearing on April 3 will determine if the ban will be extended. Simultaneously, a federal appeals court is scheduled to review the case on April 16, which could potentially override the state proceedings. In the meantime, Kalshi faces similar challenges in Massachusetts and criminal charges in Arizona, intensifying the regulatory debate.
