A16z Crypto, Andreessen Horowitz’s Web3 division, announced major updates to Jolt zkVM to integrate native support for true zero-knowledge proofs. However, they also criticized certain developers for using the term “ZK” as a synonym for brevity or speed (succinctness), when true zero-knowledge cryptography must guarantee the total privacy of the prover’s data without relying on costly computational processes or trusted setups.
With these updates, the company seeks to correct a terminological issue that confuses the community at a time when institutional privacy is critical for mass adoption. By implementing the NovaBlindFold folding scheme, Jolt now generates proofs that protect sensitive information with a minimal increase in data size, achieving superior technical efficiency compared to other zkVMs that require complex “wrapping” procedures to be truly private.
The ecosystem will be watching how this improvement in transparency and efficiency influences the competition among Ethereum Layer 2s and other zk-Rollups. The ability to offer native privacy without sacrificing performance will be the standard to follow, forcing other projects to validate whether their solutions are truly “Zero-Knowledge” or if they only offer succinct proofs under a marketing label.
