Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that he intends to be fully back to decentralized social in 2026, framing it as a governance and product-design reset for online communication.

Buterin argued that decentralization enables meaningful competition: multiple clients can operate on shared data layers and the same social graph, reducing the leverage of any single interface or engagement-optimizing algorithm. He also took aim at crypto-native social projects that treat a speculative token as ā€œinnovation,ā€ calling the resulting corporate-style hype ā€œcorposlop.ā€

He added that the shift is already underway, noting he has been reading and posting through a multi-client interface that supports X, Lens, Farcaster, and Bluesky, and said he plans to post more actively on Lens this year. Watch for whether decentralized social apps can translate that momentum into higher-quality feeds and clearer user choice at scale.
