Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer, Nissan, has just filed for four new Web3-related trademarks in the United States for its Infiniti, Nismo and Nissan brands. The car giant’s Japan unit is also experimenting with auto sales in the metaverse.
Despit the ongoing bear market, global conglomerates are increasingly ramping up efforts to solidify their presence in the burgeoning Web3 space. Web3 related projects have experienced an exponential boom with an increase in the decentralized finance (DeFi) activity, over the past coulple of months. A recent report suggested the Web3 market size will grow a staggering 44.9% from 2022 to 2030. Recently, several multi-billion dollar companies ranging from various sectors have joined in the Web3 and metaverse craze.
Nissan Embarks on Web3 Journey
On March 13, prominent trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, took to twitter to reveal that Nissan has filed for trademark applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The recent filing show Nissan’s plans to create virtual clothes, cars, headgear, trading cards, toys, tickets, and an NFT marketplace for trading and minting digital artworks and collectibles.

Nissan has also outlined a plan for metaverse advertising services and other “entertainment services” covering online video, images, artwork, tickets, audio, sounds and music among other categories. The recent filing comes after the car giant filed five NFT trademark applications for some of its most iconic car models like GTR, SKYLINE, and Z, in November.
Last week, the automobile manufacturer announced a metaverse-related initiative revealing it is conducting a three-month “demonstration experiment” of its virtual store “Nissan Hype Lab” to “study, consult, test drive, and purchase Nissan vehicles,” while in the metaverse. Nissan wrote,
“The new initiative can conduct everything from considering a car to making a purchase contract with Nissan Tokyo Sales on the Metaverse.”
Web3 Trademark Applications Soar
Car brands, luxury fashion giants, insurance companies, banking firms and a number of real estate companies among other industries have already dipped their toes in the Web3, non-fungible tokens (NFT) and metaverse waters. Of late, numerous automakers such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and BMW have made strong strides to get their hands on Web3 trademarks.

Last month, American cutomitive behemoth, General Motors filed for two new trademark applications covering its Chevrolet and Cadillac brands. Moreover, Toyota has also recently announced a Web3 based hackathon event in collaboration with Astar Network.
