TL;DR

  • Tezos X introduces a modular architecture to improve scalability and performance.
  • A massive increase in transaction capacity per second is expected thanks to Smart Rollups.
  • The upgrade plans to improve interoperability and attract more developers with support for mainstream programming languages.

Tezos X is the new evolution proposal of the Tezos blockchain, created with a modular vision to face current scalability and performance challenges.

This initiative is the product of the joint work of Nomadic Labs, Trilitech and Functori.

Since its inception, Tezos has been designed to be upgradable and adaptable according to the needs of its community, and this new proposal faithfully follows this premise.

Originally, the protocol operated as a monolithic blockchain, where each node replicated all activities.

However, this model is not sustainable in the long term, as it increases hardware and bandwidth requirements, which can lead to centralization.

To overcome these limitations, Tezos has adopted a modular design.

In this new approach, various activities are handled by specialized modules, while crucial tasks such as consensus and governance remain in layer 1.

One of the most significant advancements in Tezos X is the introduction of Smart Rollups.

These allow transaction execution to occur in dedicated and optimized layers, maintaining the integrity and security guaranteed by layer 1.

In a public demonstration in July 2023, developers achieved a throughput of one million transactions per second by combining Smart Rollups with Data Availability Committees.

This achievement puts Tezos close to its “broadband moment,” in which network capacity and speed increase dramatically.

In addition to improving horizontal scalability, Tezos X also focuses on vertical scalability.

By allowing Smart Rollups to use high-powered hardware, the need to maintain a parallel network is eliminated, centralizing activities in a single canonical rollup.

This vision, scheduled to be completed in 2026, seeks not only to improve performance but also to recover the composability of applications, facilitating the interaction between them without friction or significant latencies.

Tezos interoperability and development

Tezos X not only focuses on performance but also on improving the developer experience and interoperability.

Currently, many blockchains require developers to learn specific new programming languages.

However, Tezos X plans to support mainstream programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, and Java, opening the door to a vast developer community and greater innovation within the ecosystem.

This measure not only facilitates development in the company, but also allows the integration of existing applications in other ecosystems.

Projects like Etherlink, an EVM -compatible Smart Rollup, will enable the implementation of smart contracts in Solidity, creating frictionless integration with EVM ecosystem tools.

Likewise, the development of a Michelson rollup will allow existing applications on Tezos to benefit from the scalability and low latency of Smart Rollups, maintaining trust bridges between different execution environments.

Tezos X represents a significant step towards a more scalable, interoperable and efficient future for the company.

With a modular structure, improvements in speed and processing capacity, and a focus on attracting a broader community of developers, the protocol is poised to become a reliable and scalable backend for a wide range of applications.
