This sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Richard Jones in Seattle, is significantly less than the three years sought by prosecutors.
In November 2023, Zhao admitted his guilt for violating anti-money laundering regulations and consented to a settlement of $4.3 billion. Even with the gravity of these charges, the presiding judge declared that there was no proof indicating Zhao had been alerted about any unlawful activities within Binance.
Changpeng Zhao acknowledged his actions fully, expressing that the initial step was to admit his errors. He expressed regret for his “misjudgments” and took “complete accountability” for his actions in a letter addressed to the presiding judge. He further claimed that the founder of Binance was attempting to “undermine the crypto industry”.
