The Consumer Federation of America said that Americans lost an estimated $80.7 billion to cryptocurrency-related scams and cybercrime in 2025. The figure goes far beyond the $11.4 billion reported to the FBI, with the study treating underreported fraud as the central gap in measuring crypto losses.

Crypto accounted for more than half of the losses reported through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and increased nearly 22% from 2024. The federation applied a 7.1-times multiplier to reported figures, based on earlier federal victimization data, making the $80.7 billion total an extrapolated estimate rather than a direct count of verified cases.

Across all online scams and crimes, the organization estimated $148.2 billion in U.S. losses, up 25.8% year over year and averaging $1,009 per household. The next test is whether updated reporting and enforcement data narrow that gap, because crypto’s estimated share now places digital-asset fraud at the center of the broader scam economy.
