The Lazarus group has laundered at least <strong>$455 million<\/strong> through Tornado Cash. The hacking group has masterminded numerous data and security breaches, including an intrusion into Sony Pictures in late 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Treasury also accused Tornado Cash in another money laundering activity of about <strong>$100 million<\/strong> from a virtual currency firm, Harmony in June and as recently as last week in the theft of Nomad, a virtual currency technology company. He specified that <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-economy.com\/cryptocurrency-mixer-usage-hits-all-time-high-chainalysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixing services<\/a> such as Tornado Cash, combine various digital assets, including potentially illegally obtained funds and legitimately obtained funds, so that illegal actors can <strong>obscure the origin of the stolen funds<\/strong>. The official who chose to be anonymous added,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>&#8220;Tornado Cash has been the go-to mixer for cybercriminals looking to launder the proceeds of crime, as well as helping to enable hackers, including those currently under U.S. sanctions, to launder the proceeds of their cybercrimes by covering up the origin and transfer of this illicit virtual currency.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019ll continue to aggressively pursue actions against currency mixers laundering virtual currency for criminals.
