{"id":16882,"date":"2019-09-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crypto-economy.com\/ethereum-eth-ethereums-forthcoming-hardfork-istanbul-to-launch-on-testnet-on-october-2nd\/"},"modified":"2019-09-07T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-07T00:00:00","slug":"ethereum-eth-ethereums-forthcoming-hardfork-istanbul-to-launch-on-testnet-on-october-2nd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crypto-economy.com\/ethereum-eth-ethereums-forthcoming-hardfork-istanbul-to-launch-on-testnet-on-october-2nd\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethereum [ETH] \u2013 Ethereum\u2019s Forthcoming Hardfork Istanbul to Launch on Testnet on October 2nd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Ethereum\u2019s forthcoming network upgrade<\/strong> may have gotten a tentative launch date following Friday, September 6<sup>th<\/sup> core developers meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to the meeting, the<strong> testnet to try out the six proposed EIPs has been set to early October<\/strong>, a month after the initial date which was to be launched on September 4<sup>th<\/sup> this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This also means that <strong>the launch to Mainnet will similarly be delayed to November this year. In the Friday meeting,<\/strong> Ethereum Foundation\u2019s community manager Hudson Jameson stated that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u201cFor anyone listening in who doesn\u2019t know how this works, we pick a block number that we estimate to be around the 2nd of October, however, that might be one or two days behind or forward from that date based on how fast blocks are produced between now and then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Ethereum Core Devs Meeting #70 [2019-09-06]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6m0So81_j2Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So October 2<sup>nd<\/sup> it is, however, the developers did not settle on a block number for the activation on the Ropsten testnet. As stated, <strong>only <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-economy.com\/ethereum-eth-ethereum-core-developers-approve-6-eips-to-be-included-in-istanbul-hard-fork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six EIPs out of the proposed 30 have been accepted<\/a> o be included in the Istanbul<\/strong> hard fork while another eight have been pushed to the proceeding hard fork dubbed Berlin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">One of those proposed EIPs is the controversial <strong>ProgPoW<\/strong> update which is designed to change the mining algorithm to <strong>ensure that ASICs are virtually ineffective in mining blocks on the Ethereum network. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">ASICs are specialized mining equipment that is many times more efficient and powerful that the graphical processing units that are popular with Ethereum miners.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/crypto-economy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/minero.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This particular update has been in discussion for close to a year now. Part of the discussions included hiring two auditors to go over the code to ensure that it is economically stable and programmatically sound to roll onto to the Mainnet. One of the auditors\u2019 \u2013 Least Authority \u2013 CEO Liz Steininger attended Friday\u2019s meeting and she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6m0So81_j2Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em> \u201cOn a high-level, [ProgPoW] reaches its design goals. It\u2019s reasonable towards its intended economic effect. No major issues there. That said, we did find one [potential] attack \u2026 and had some recommendations about things that could be done to have better assurances of ProgPoW working as intended in the future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The other auditor is more focused on the hardware part of the proposal and according to Jameson, should be submitting their report pretty soon. He said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em> \u201cBob\u2019s audit should be coming out very soon.
